Summary
Purposes of Practicum
Sea-Teacher gave me the opportunity to experience what it's like to teach in another country. Honestly, I felt unworthy as a participant because my English skills were not yet fluent. As we know that the Philippines uses English as their second language. This was definitely a challenge for me, even I felt that the students at MMSU LAb High School were definitely more fluent in speaking English than me, but from that it became an encouragement for me to always improve my English skills. I also became aware of the differences in the education system in Indonesia and the Philippines. This is one of the most valuable experiences in my life and I am proud of myself for being able to overcome the challenges during this program and dare to get out of my comfort zone. I would like to say thank you so much for SEAMEO, UNMUL, and MMSU that already gave me chance to became participant in this amazing program.
Procedure of Practicum
I had four weeks staying in the Philippines to feel the teaching environment there. In first week untul third week is my schedule for class observation, but in the second week, my resource teacher already determine the topic for my demo teaching, so I have started working on the lesson plan, then in the last week or fourth week I do demo teaching. I also got evaluation from my resource teacher after done with my demo teaching.
Outcomes of Practicum
After I have done my practicum session, I realizes that it was amazing experiences for teaching in Philippines. I learned how to make lesson plan that kinda have different style with Indonesian's lesson plan, I learned how to teach amazing students, how to managing class, how to solve the problem, and how to deal with my anxiety before start the lesson. I really wanna say thank you so much for my resource teacher, Sir Al Cameron. I really appreciate him so much. He teach me how to make lesson plan with patience, I really appreciate how he corrected the mistakes I made in the lesson plan and PPT without offending me. He is also very a good teacher in class, teaching me how to explain very complicated topic to be easy, also paying attention to the words spoken to students when give feedback so that students want to correct their mistakes without feel offended. I feel very lucky Sir Al become my resource teacher and very grateful I met amazing teacher like him. Thank you so much Sir Al, I learn so many things from you and I will remember it forever.
Challenges of Practicum
The challenges of practicum obviously is language. Philippines using English language as their second language, meanwhile English language in Indonesia is foreign language. So, its really big challenge for me to teach students that fluent than me. But i can overcome the challenge with always practicing my demo teaching before the day and make small script so I can built my confidence because like my lecturer said "confident is key". Another challenge is because I know its my first time for teaching the real student, I feel really really really nervous, but I can control it since I know my friends and my resource teacher supports me and I'm always think that I already do my best.
Overall Impression
During my practicum at MMSU, I just felt like in my home town, I always felt I'm not far from my parents and my siblings. Met friends from another side of Indonesia, met kind and humble staff from MMSU, kind resource teacher, FS students from MMSU, and another kind people in Philippines makes me felt I'm not far from my actual hometown. Philippines will get special place in my heart. I would like to say thank you so much for all part of MMSU. Thank you for treat us very well for 1 month, I hope we will meet again in next chance!
